Anker's Eufy MindBase puts home camera analysis on a local chip

A 26-TOPS processor, 64GB of internal storage and support for up to 48TB of external drives, doing the video analysis without sending it to a cloud.

Anker has introduced the Eufy MindBase, a home AI hub that processes camera and security footage locally. It carries a 26-TOPS chip, 64GB of internal flash and supports up to 48TB of external storage, according to The Verge.

The pitch is that video analysis happens in the house rather than on a vendor's servers, which reduces both the data leaving the property and the dependence on a subscription for the feature to work.

The problem it addresses is a real one

Cloud-connected home cameras have accumulated a poor record. Footage from inside people's homes has been accessed by employees, exposed by breaches, handed to law enforcement under varying standards, and made contingent on subscriptions that can be repriced or discontinued.

A camera whose analysis runs on a box in the same building removes most of that at the architectural level rather than the policy level. There is no vendor-side copy to be breached, subpoenaed or monetised, and the feature does not stop working when a subscription lapses.

The surveillance context makes the distinction sharper. 404 Media documented a Texas investigation that searched more than 80,000 Flock automated plate reader cameras, in a case where the underlying conduct is lawful in most of the country. The concern with networked cameras is less that any single operator misbehaves and more that a queryable national record exists at all.

A local hub does not contribute to one.

What 26 TOPS actually buys

Twenty-six trillion operations per second is respectable for an edge device and is not a frontier model's worth of compute. It runs the workloads that home security actually needs — person and vehicle detection, familiar face recognition, package identification, activity classification — continuously across several camera streams.

It does not run a large language model well, which bounds what "AI hub" can mean here. Anker has not published what models run on it, whether they can be updated, or whether third-party models can be loaded.

That last question determines whether this is genuinely local computing or a closed appliance that happens to compute locally. A device that runs only the vendor's models, updated at the vendor's discretion, has removed the cloud dependency for data while keeping it for capability.

Storage as the tell

Support for 48TB of external storage is the specification that says most about the intent. That is months of continuous multi-camera recording retained locally.

It implies the design assumes no cloud retention at all, rather than local processing with cloud backup — which is the more common architecture and the one that keeps the vendor's copy.

It also puts retention under the owner's control, which is where it belongs and which most consumers will never configure. A household accumulating a year of video of itself has created a record that can be seized, stolen or subpoenaed, and the fact that it sits in a cupboard rather than a data centre changes who holds it rather than whether it exists.

The wider shift

This is consistent with the direction of the week. OpenBMB released MiniCPM5-2B under Apache 2.0 for on-device use. The Information reported that Nvidia regards Apple as its main rival in local AI, and that OpenAI bought tens of thousands of Macs for reinforcement learning.

The economics are straightforward: high-volume, low-complexity inference does not justify a network round trip and a frontier model's price. Anker has not disclosed pricing or availability.
