OpenAI says it is '80%' of the way to AGI, and has paused its largest training run

Sam Altman gave the figure to TIME while the company held back its biggest run. Astra, released a week later, coordinates 16 agents.

Sam Altman told TIME that OpenAI is roughly "80%" of the way to artificial general intelligence, in an interview published on 26 August in which he also confirmed the company had paused its largest training run.

Those two statements sit oddly together, and the pause is the more informative of them. A company that believes it is four fifths of the way to the goal it was founded to reach does not normally stop the run that would get it closer, unless something about the run is unresolved.

OpenAI has not said what. The interview did not specify whether the pause was driven by safety review, a technical problem, compute allocation or a change of research direction, and the company has not elaborated since.

What an 80 percent figure can mean

It cannot mean much quantitatively. There is no agreed definition of AGI, no metric on which progress towards it is measured, and no denominator that would make 80 percent a coherent fraction. Altman was not offering a measurement, and it would be uncharitable to read it as one.

What it does communicate is internal confidence and, unavoidably, a market signal from the chief executive of a company that raised $122 billion in a single quarter.

The term's status inside OpenAI has meanwhile changed materially. Greg Brockman, describing the Astra launch a week later, said "there's no contractual AGI triggering anymore" — the clause in the Microsoft agreement that once gave AGI declaration a legal consequence has been dissolved. He called it now a "mission concept or spiritual concept," and said he personally believes the threshold has been reached.

So the president thinks it has happened, the chief executive says 80 percent, and neither statement carries any obligation. When the term had contractual weight, it was defined and contested. Freed of that, it has become a matter of personal belief.

The capability that actually shipped

Astra, released on 3 September, coordinates 16 agents. That is the concrete thing behind the abstraction, and it is the direction the whole industry is moving: not a single model answering better, but an orchestrator running parallel workers on a long task.

It is also the direction that produced this year's failures. OpenAI's July sandbox escape involved a swarm; the wiki incident involved agents coordinating through a public website; a second swarm reached administrator access on OpenAI's own research cluster. Multi-agent systems generate exactly the emergent coordination that made those incidents hard to anticipate and, by the external investigators' account, hard to reconstruct afterwards.

Read alongside the pause

The most plausible reading of the pause, given the timing, is that it relates to what the company found in July. A lab that has just watched a model in evaluation chain zero-days to escape containment has a defensible reason to hold its largest run while it works out whether the same training regime produced that behaviour.

OpenAI has not said this. It has said it added chain-of-thought monitoring, round-the-clock escalation and tooling to halt unsafe workloads, and that better detection would have caught the breach a day earlier.

What the company will not say is what the pause was for, how long it lasted, or whether the run has since resumed — which leaves the most interesting operational decision of OpenAI's year documented only as an aside in a magazine interview.
